Puerto Banús - one of the world's glitziest hotspots

Europe’s very own Beverly Hills

Nearly 50 years after it was built as a Spanish rival to the likes of St Tropez and Monaco, Puerto Banús is still regarded as one of the most upmarket and exclusive European playgrounds. A simple stroll through ‘the port’ will tell you all you need to know.

Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Bentleys are par for the course in Puerto Banús (or simply ‘Banús’ to the locals), and you will never see a greater collection of sleek superyachts outside of a specialised boat show than you will in the stunning harbour that forms the focal point of the town.

But glamour and upscale playthings are the routine backdrop to everyday life in Banús. Cruising muscle cars and powerful yachts garner no more than a sideways glance from the locals, usually because the locals happen to be of the same financial means as those behind the steering wheels. Puerto Banús is the kind of place where if you have to ask the price, you can’t afford it. Its collection of designer stores on the street along the harbour front (Versace, Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana, Cartier, Jimmy Choo…) rival New York’s Fifth Avenue or Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive for exclusivity and choice.

And the yachts have to be seen to be believed. The floating palaces that use Banús as their main mooring make the general scenery an incredibly upmarket one, and it’s not unusual to occasionally see famous faces stepping off a yacht in the evening on their way to dinner in one of the town’s vast selection of top-notch restaurants.

Given Puerto Banús’ popularity and cachet, property does not come cheap. Frontline apartments are coveted thanks to their central location and enviable views, but even properties further back from the beach attract huge interest from buyers keen to be based in the heart of the Costa del Sol’s action (exclusive beach clubs – with their now infamous ‘champagne-spraying parties’ – upmarket nightclubs, sleek wine bars, trendy restaurants, a fashionable casino and a customer base of young, tanned, good-looking revellers make Puerto Banús the number one spot on the Coast for nightlife). Banús can lay claim to housing some of the most deluxe apartments and penthouses on the Costa del Sol, fitting in seamlessly with their exclusive surroundings. A little further out of town – but still within walking distance – are the Andalusian village-like urbanisations of Los Naranjos and Dama de Noche, areas that are home to impressive apartments and exclusive townhouses.

Villa-wise, the Nueva Andalucía area behind the port – set amid tumbling lush green hills and surrounded on all sides by stunningly beautiful golf courses and clubhouses – is home to some extremely impressive villas and mansions and is the ‘in’ place in which to live. This is where you can escape the action and enjoy the zen-like serenity of a peaceful and tranquil neighbourhood, while being only a few minutes from the buzzing activity of the port.

With the world-famous Marbella Club Hotel also just a short drive from Banús and with a list of famous and very well heeled visitors as long as the Paséo (boardwalk) that stretches all the way to cosmopolitan Marbella, Puerto Banús is where it all happens on the Costa del Sol. It’s a glamorous, vibrant and thriving area where style, luxury and elegance combine to create a unique, appealing and ever-popular ‘playground for the jet-set’. This is where you can live like a movie star, among movie stars!
